Big Virus Coming!!

What should you do if you get an email like this:

BIG VIRUS COMING! PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS! This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept. COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US.

Delete it. That’s right. In the history of the Internet, every email message that has ever encouraged you to re-send it to “everyone you know”, for whatever reason, has been a hoax. Every one, every time. Let me repeat that… Every email message that has ever encouraged you to re-send it to “everyone you know” has been a hoax.

All those chain email letters that promise donations to help sick children, or promise you a few dollars for your cooperation — they have all been a hoax. They do nothing but over-burden the email system and make people less sensitive to real information. Besides, if you read that email message again, you realize that it doesn’t tell you anything to do. So what good would it be to send it to someone else?

The virus that this one talks about may be real, but it is not “coming soon”, it’s probably been around for years. The quotations from McAfee, Symantec, Snopes, CNN, Microsoft, etc., are fabricated. If there is a real virus threat of the magnitude described, you will hear about it on TV yourself, not through an anonymous email. If it were real, national and local news reporters would fall over each other to report it.
