I Shot an Eagle

No, not that kind of an eagle. I competed in a fund-raising golf tournament at The Club at Patriots Glen in Elkton, Maryland. My team didn’t finish among the winners, but I thoroughly enjoyed the day. In fact, I made perhaps my best golf shot ever. There was no official recognition, but it was also probably the best shot of the day at the tournament.

It happened on the par 4 number 10. The hole was playing 365 yards. I hit a good tee shot across the dog leg left. The ball came to rest just two yards short of the 100 yard fairway marker. The flag was in the front of the green. As I addressed the ball, I told my playing partner that I was going to hit my wedge right at the pin. I said the ball would take two hops on the green and then roll right into the cup. Of course, I say that all the time. But this time, it actually happened!

As the ball went flying high toward the green, my partner exclaimed that it was dead on line. The rest happened so fast we could only watch. We saw the ball hit on the fringe of the green, take one hop onto the green, take another low hop toward the flag, then roll straight for it. We heard the ball hit the stick, and then it disappeared from view. Bang! An eagle two! We both whooped, high fived, low fived, and whooped some more. I’ve chipped in before, and I once made a long putt for eagle on a par 5, but this was the first time I ever holed out from the fairway.
